Platters

Platters were an essential part of dinnerware during the Art Nouveau era. They were used for serving food at dinner parties and family meals. Upper class households would often have food served on sterling silver platters during dinner parties. Porcelain and glass platters were more affordable and also used extensively during this era.

Fabulous Art Nouveau Martele silver fish platter. Made by Gorham in Providence on April 6 1898. Shaped and narrow oval well. Tapering and chased shoulder. At ends are scaly fish heads with exophthalmic eyes and tentacular whiskers. On sides more piscine ornament including cherubs ferried along in fish-harnessed shells. Dramatically wavy rim. Fully marked including maker’s stamp and pattern no. 366.Dimensions: H 2 x W 23 1/2 x D 11 1/2 in. Weight: 64.5 troy ounces.
